During the battle his division under heavy fire conducted torpedo attacks on the German Battlecruiser Fleet. HMS Nestor was sunk and Commander Bingham taken prisoner. He was held at a number of camps in Germany until the Armistice in 1918. Previous to his command of Nestor he had been one of the Gunnery Officers in HMS Invincible and served at the Battle of the Falkland Islands in December 1914.
