He joined the Navy on 09/02/1915 as a Boy II and signed up for 12 years on 13/08/1915. He served on the light cruiser HMS Phaeton from 25/09/1915 to 30/01/1920. He was an ordinary telegrapher from 13/08/1915 to 15/12/1915, ordinary seaman from 15/12/1915 to 16/08/1916 and then able seaman from 16/08/1916 to 17/03/1920.
