Downside
Founded at Douai, France in 1606 by a group of exiled monks. By 1617 English Catholics were sending boys across the Channel to be educated at the school. When French Revolutionaries plundered the Abbey and School in the 1790s the monks and boys were allowed to escape to England and, for nineteen years, the school was located in Acton Burnell, Shropshire in the house of Sir Edward Smythe, a former pupil. In 1814 the Abbey and School moved to the present site in Stratton-on-the-Fosse in Somerset.
