Joined RFR 26/2/1919. He lost a brother and mother within a few weeks of each other, his sister disappearing and his supposed father abandoning him for three months during which he was held in Cuckfield (Sussex) school work house. He changed his name (originally Charles W Spray) before joining the navy. His birth year entered on his service record (14/02/1885) but is in fact 1 year later 1886. He joined the Royal Navy 10/07/1900 and served until 25/02/1919 when he was de-mobilised and then joined the RAF. From 14/05/1915 he served aboard HMS Agincourt as leading seaman and was then promoted to Petty Officer 26/09/2018 to 25/02/1919. He then went fleet reserve, then the RAF for 229 days and sometime after spent a few years in the merchant navy. He went on to serve in Portsmouth Dockyard as an electric crane driver and harbour man and final fire watch during WWII during which he and his family were bombed out.
