Aboard the training vessel HMS Lion in 1891. Started his Continuous Service on 8 October 1892. Aboard HMS Doris in 1901, and participated in the Boer War. Commenced coastguard duties in Ireland from 12 December 1901 onwards. Awarded LSGC medal in 1911. Was at Belderrig Coastguard Station at the outbreak of war. Served aboard HMS Caroline from 4 December 1914 to 10 March 1919. Discharged on 30 April 1919, so as to join the Coastguard New Force service. WW1 medals sent to HM Coastguard, Bristol. Address on 1921 census is Coast Guard Station, Combe Martin, Devon. Retired in 1935 whilst stationed at Porlock. Came to Ilfracombe on retirement, and during WW2 was connected with the Coastguard Patrol Service, serving until a month before his death. Lived at Anchorage, New Barnstaple Road, Ilfracombe. Died on 6 March 1941 at Leatherhead Emergency Hospital, an outstation of King's College Hospital, Denmark Hill, London SE5. The Royal Blind School, Leatherhead, was requisitioned by King's College Hospital as a national emergency hospital during World War Two.
