Chester was badly damaged early in the action while screening the 3rd Battlecruiser Squadron. Cornwell's gun was knocked out and all the crew aprt from him were killed. He remained at his post awaiting orders throughout the rest of the battle for which devotion to duty he was awarded a posthumous Victoria Cross. He died of his wounds in hospital at Grimsby two days after the battle. He is buried at Manor Park Cemetery, Serbert Road, Forest Gate, Essex in East London.
