A keen rugby player he represented the Hampshire United Services and gained his first cap for England on 14th February 1914 playing at Twickenham against Ireland. At the Battle of Jutland Arthur was a Lieutenant in X Turret of HMS Lion. After Jutland he was promoted to Lieutenant Commander and was involved in the Zeebrugge Raid on 23rd April 1918, commanding the naval storming parties while aboard HMS Vindictive. During the raid he was one of the sailors killed and was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for his actions.
