He was a stoker on HMS Invincible and lost his life at the Battle of Jutland. He was born in Shorwell 27th October 1894, the son of Edwin Downer's brother Harry and Lucy Westmore and therefore Edwin's nephew. Stoker 1st Class K/18211. He is remembered on a marble war memorial in St Peter’s Church, Shorwell, on his father’s gravestone in the cemetery at Shorwell and on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial. There is a frame containing his Great War scroll, plaque, medals and photograph at Calbourne Mill. See isle-of-wight-memorials.org.uk He enlisted 25th February 1913 for a period of 12 years. Height: 5 ft 3 & 3/8 inches, chest: 34 inches, Hair: dark brown, Eyes: grey, Complexion: fresh Service record: Victory II 25th February to 30th August 1913. Stoker II Duncan 31st August 1913 to 4th June 1914. Promoted to Stoker I on 6th May 1914 Queen 5th June to 24th June 1914 Victory II 25th June to 2nd August 1914 Invincible 3rd August 1914 to 31st May 1916 DD (Discharged dead?) 31st May 1914 Killed in Action War gratuity paid.
