Enlistment 03/10/1898 Next of kin address England More info Barnard was born in the Isle of Grain near Rochester enlisted as a stoker in 1898. The following year he was sent to India and was drafted to Eclipse, a light cruiser on the East Indies Station. In January 1900 he was given 90 days imprisonment with hard labour for insubordination. Shortly after his release he attempted to desert but was caught and sentenced to another 90 days. He was then sent back to Chatham where he had two further periods of imprisonment of 14 days each. After 1901, there are no further disciplinary offences recorded. His conduct was assessed as Very Good and started to collect good conduct badges. In 1910 he was rated Stoker Petty Officer, serving in the cruiser Hampshire in the Mediterranean and China. In 1914 he was drafted to the destroyer Broke and was still with her at Jutland. Shortly before midnight on the 31st May, she was struck and suffered heavy casualties. The helmsman was hit and the Broke then rammed the next astern, Sparrowhawk. She broke free and had a difficult passage home. Barnard left the Broke while she was under repair and joined the Renown at the beginning of her maiden commission. He was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal in 1917 and retired in 1921.
