Next of kin address UK More info Imperial war museum DOCUMENT ARCHIVE - SEARCH RESULTS Collection Name Box Reference ID NO Chessman, J DS/MISC/39 12060 DS/MISC/39 Microfilm copy of a ts account (273pages), written ca 1972, of his service with the Royal Navy both before and during the First World War, initially training in HMS GANGES at Shotley Barracks at Harwich, transferring to HMS VIVID (Davenport Barracks) for signals training before being posted to HMS WARSPITE where he praises Captain E M Philpotts, complains of the conditions on the lower deck and class distinctions made by officers, describes his involvement in the Battle of Jutland, collisions with HMS BARHAM and HMS VALIANT, and then his transfer to HMS RADSTOCK where he refers to a successful action against a submarine, later serving in the submarine K14 where he volunteered to be a stoker, describing his training and the lack of knowledge about stoking work. He left the service in 1919 suffering from acute neurasthenia.
