Enlisted for 5 year Continuous Service on 14 January 1916. Discharged on 11 February 1921. He joined the police in the spring of 1921. 5 April 1922 certificate Royal Society for Protection of Life from Fire - courageous conduct at a fire. 5 December 1923 presented with Royal Humane Society medal and certificate, and silver watch from Carnegie Hero Fund for rescuing a man from the canal at Farneley Street (sic). 4 June 1924 - 1st Stripe of Merit for rescuing a man from drowning. He progressed through the police force and retired on 1 Oct 1950. He was a policeman during WW2, and was awarded a Defence Medal (UK) as a consequence. Died on 3 September 1970 in Oldham.
