Port DetailNext of kin address UK More info Alfred James Foote was born in Plymouth on 10th May 1872. His service record originally stated 1876 but there is a footnote that the true date was 1872, He enlisted in the navy on 2nd May 1901and was rated initially as Carpenter’s Crew. By the time of Jutland he had been serving in HMS Warrior since July 1913 and had risen from Leading Carpenters Crew to Joiner (a rate created in 1912) with effect from 1st January 1915 and to Shipwright from 1st July 1915. He continued to be listed in this position until 13 June 1916, 12 days after Warrior’s loss. Non Commissioned rates at this time were in a state of evolution. In 1914, the four branches were Military, Engineering Medical and Accounts. Artisans like carpenters shipwrights and joiners formed one of the three main subdivisions of the Engineering Branch along with Stokers and Artificers. By 1918 Artisans were a branch in their own right.
