He was the son of Alan Edmondson Tate (Lieutenant Colonel RAMC retd) and Zaidee Tate. The family settled in Bognor and he entered the navy as a boy cadet in January 1911 on HMS Implacable (training establishment) At the age of 16 on the outbreak of war he was ranked midshipman. After a spell in Haslar hospital with appendicitis, he was passed fit and sent back to Implacable.
