Albert Chappell joined the Army at Nottingham, the Sherwood Foresters, on 19th August 1914. But, after five convictions for misconduct, the Army discharged him on 28th November 1914. Joining the Royal Navy on 3rd March 1915, O.S. Albert Chappell, R.N., served aboard H.M.S. Malaya at Jutland. But once more proved more trouble than his services were worth and, after four further convictions for bad behaviour, he was removed from the Senior Service on 5th November 1916. Conscripted into the Army, Chappell was killed in action as a private soldier with 2/5th Battalion East Lancashire Regiment on 26th March 1918. Commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial, he was the 22 year-old son of James and Cecilia Chappell, of 16 Crown Street, Carlton Road, Nottingham.
