George Buckham (front row, left hand side) was born in South Shields in 1894 to a family of 8 other children and became a miner like his father. At age 19 he joined the Royal Navy (K17649) as a stoker (fireman) and served on HMS Victory II (Portsmouth), HMS St Vincent, HMS Weymouth, before being transferred to HMS Queen Mary on the 27th May, just 4 days before the Battle of Jutland. HMS Queen Mary was struck by a shell from Derfflinger which detonated the forward magazine, the resulting explosion broke the ship in two and she sank a few minutes later, killing 1266 men and officers, including George. Thank you to Paul Richardson for this information.
