Uncle John Pearce is a shipyard riveter. Does not appear on 1911 census, is he at sea? Enrolled in the RNR for 5 years service and mobilised for period of war only (called out by proclamation) on 8 June 1915. 'Nature of service prior to entering Reserve: [left blank]' but RN service record records his occupation as riveter. No distinguishing marks recorded. Embarked HMS Caroline on 4 September 1915. Disembarked from HMS Caroline 28 August 1917. Later served on HM Trawlers not as a Stoker, but as a Deck Hand. Remustered as such, and renumbered as DA 18756 on 24 October 1917. From January to June 1918 served aboard Auxiliary Patrol boats used against German and Austrian submarines at the mouth of the Adriatic (depot ship HMS Queen). 'Coates is being discharged to Cimino Camp, for passage [to GB] in order that he may be discharged to[sic] H.M. Service under terms of Admiralty Weekly Order No 4439/1917..
