The Royal Navy Wireman 1st Class Joseph Fenn 25.1.1915 - 4.2.1919 Recently I became aware that it is possible to obtain service records -via the computer - of those who had served in the 1914 - 18 war and, as you can see I obtained granddad’s. I was surprised how brief it is and considering the space available how cramped. My interpretation is as follows : I am unclear as to whether granddad volunteered or was conscripted The records indicate he reported to H.M.S.Vernon , a shore based training establishment, at Portsmouth on the 25.1.1915 as an Able seaman, and remained there until transferring to H.M.S Victory 2, another shore based establishment until the 20th April. I discovered this base was located at Crystal Palace !!!! On completion of his training granddad joined the Battle Cruiser H.M.S Agincourt on the 28th April, presumably the eight day gap could have been embarkation leave. Prior to joining the Royal Navy granddad was a qualified electrician, so it is no surprise he was promoted to Wireman 2nd class on the 28th April and, was subsequently promoted to Wireman 1st class on the 1st January 1916. In my previous writings of the Fenn Family, I stated I was unsure which ship granddad was serving on during the Battle of Jutland, his service record confirms it was the Agincourt. The battle commenced on the 31st May 1916. I was unable to find any additional information to that on the enclosed sheet. But you may recall granddad said after the battle was over, in his thanks to the crew, the ships Captain said a torpedo had surfaced by the ships side and sank and how fortunate this was for the ship and crew. Granddad remained on the Agincourt until the 27th February 1918, and was posted to H.M.S.Victory 2, on the 28th and remained there until the 11th November - Armistice Day -then to H.M.S Repulse - a Battle Cruiser - on the 12th November until the 17th December and then back to H.M.S Vernon for demobilisation on the 4th February 1919.
